Drawing,questioning,specifying.

Haylett Discovery Ltd is a small design practice working across identity, environments and digital product. We take briefs seriously, ask the awkward questions early, and hand over work that holds up in production.

A quiet studio interior with a large drafting table, technical drawings and a deep green wall
The studio, Bedford — drawings reviewed on paper before anything is built.

A note on how we work

We would rather write one honest paragraph about a decision than present thirty variations of it.

Every project leaves a paper trail: what we found, what we ruled out, and why the final route was chosen. It makes the work easier to defend internally, and far easier for someone else to pick up later.

MethodFour stages, each with something written down

No theatre, no unnecessary decks — outputs you can circulate internally and argue with.

  1. Research notes, interview transcripts and clustered sticky notes on a workshop table
    01

    Discovery

Listening to the brief, the constraints and the people who will live with the result. Findings are written down, never implied.

    Output — Written findings

  2. A printed one-page project brief beside an ordered grid of reference cards
    02

    Definition

Research becomes a short, plain-language direction: what the work must do, what it will not do, how success is recognised.

    Output — One-page direction

  3. Pencil layout sketches, a set square, technical pens and a folded paper prototype
    03

    Design

Options drawn, made and reviewed in the open. A few well-argued routes rather than a wall of variations.

    Output — Reviewed routes

  4. Stacked letterpress printed cards beside a colour registration proof and a printer's loupe
    04

    Delivery

Artwork, specifications and guidance handed over in usable form, with support through production so intent survives the build.

    Output — Production files

WorkStudies that show the thinking

The pieces below are self-initiated, illustrative concepts, shown to demonstrate method and craft rather than to claim results. Client work is shared privately on request.

Identity system

Study 01

Meridian Field

A self-initiated identity study for an imagined environmental research body: a geometric mark built on a visible grid, a restrained ivory and green palette, and a printed guideline booklet that a non-designer could follow.

  • Mark construction
  • Typographic scale
  • Printed guidelines
Deep green signage prototype panels with coral accent stripes leaning against an ivory wall

Wayfinding family

Study 02

Halterworth Commons

A speculative wayfinding family for a mixed-use civic site: panel geometry, a single accent stripe, and a tested sequence of decision points that carries a first-time visitor without reading every word.

  • Panel geometry
  • Decision sequencing
  • Accent discipline
Layered material samples — paper, board, textile and brass — arranged on an ivory surface

Internal method

Study 03

Material Register

An in-house method for recording and comparing substrates across projects, so specification decisions can be justified in writing rather than repeated out of habit.

  • Sample records
  • Comparison method
  • Specification notes

PracticeAn index of what we do

Most engagements begin with one of these and grow. We are glad to work alongside an existing team, agency or contractor.

  • Naming systems, visual identity, typographic direction and the guidelines that keep it coherent as an organisation grows.

    • Identity design
    • Guidelines & toolkits
    • Editorial & print

StudioRun at a deliberate scale

Haylett Discovery Ltd is registered in England and Wales under company number 16578426, with its office in Bedford. The practice is organised around design activities: research, drawing, specification, and the unglamorous work of seeing something through to production.

We keep the team small on purpose. The people you meet at the first conversation are the people doing the work, and decisions are made in hours rather than weeks.

We are open about what we have not done before. Where a project needs a specialist — a fabricator, a developer, a planning consultant — we will say so and help you find one.
